The looks department is the least of the selling points of the Powerplus Verio Wind-up MP3 Player, but on saving energy and the environment, it's the tops. Without using batteries, you can charge the mp3 player simply by winding it up. One minute of winding can churn up 15-20 minutes of music. Toshiba Quickcharge Electric Bike


Using Toshiba's quick-charging lithium ion rechargeable battery, the power-assisted bike from Cannondale Sports Group LLC was exhibited at a New York auto exhibit. The bicycle can run about 20 to 30 miles per charge. It's set to release in North America and Europe on 2009. Because the ratio for the force for the motor and the legs is 1:1(meaning 50% by the machine and 50% by the legs), the bike will unlikely be released in Japan, where the maximum ratio of the motor force to legs is 2:1.

Samsung Bendable E-paper


Being exhibited here is Samsung's electronic paper display. As you can see it is very bendable, measuring at 14.3-inch and 0.3mm thick. It has a 1060 x 750 resolution. The display used carbon nanotubes (CNT) to prevent the e-paper to deteriorate after repeated bending.

Robo Plant


Oxygen. Moisture. The sweet smell. Used to be only real plant that can emit those. But now there's a new robotic plant developed by a robot research laboratory in Korea that can do these stuff just like real plants. At 130 cm in height and 40 cm in diameter, this plant reacts to environmental factors as well. Come close within 40 cm and the plant blooms towards that person. When it hears a voice, it shakes up. IF it hears music, it dances.

Vocal Joystick

University of Washington researchers have developed a software known as "Vocal Joystick" for controlling the mouse using your voice. Saying "ooo" Takes the cursor down, while saying "ahh" moves it to the upper right. They've specifically developed this to help disabled people. The Vocal Joystick software will need only a PC microphone to work. Several applications have been tested using the software, including video games and robotic arm operation.

Samsung S1 and S2 Mini External Hard Drives


Samsung is gearing up its hard drive porfolio with even smaller external drives. The S2 portable drive is 2.5 inch and comes in 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, and 500GB. The S1 mini is 1.8 inch and comes in 80GB, 120GB, and 160GB versions. Samsung used USB controllers to make their drives smaller.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Here's Nokia's answer to Apple's iPhone, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. This Nokia handset is made specially for music lovers, being the first one to support "Comes With Music", one year's access to the Nokia Music Store. Probably the most notable feature is the touch screen, which has a drop down menu that can easily access music and videos. There's also a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens. Photos and videos s=taken can easily be shared online to sites like Facebook or Flickr. To be released next year, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will sell for around 385.6 USD.

Nintendo DSi


Get ready for the nextgen version of the DS, the "DSi". Its LCD panel will now be slightly larger at 3.25". It's slightly larger and slightly thinner than the old DS. A built-in camera and music player are incorporated into the DSi. The camera will have alot of cool features like changing the expressions of people's faces, or even merging two faces into one. The music player will have different functions as well like changing the pitch, tempo, and karaoke mixing. Another big addition to the DSi is the DS Download Service. Users will be able to download content from the upcoming "Nintendo DSi Shop". The "Nintendo DSi Browser" will be the first free "Nintendo DSiWare" to be released. People will be able to buy prepaid points known as "Nintendo points" to buy content online.

Alps Electric showed its new touchpad with "minute capacitance sensing technology", capable of sensing moving fingers about 3 cm above it. The electric capacity of the hand can be sensed by capacitance sensors in the touchpad. Laptops are only the beginning. Look for it to be used in a wide variety of products.

15mm thick LCD TV


Don't be surprised if in the near future LCDs would be as thin as paper. Hitachi just showcased its new 37-inch LCD TV with the thinnest part only 15mm thick. The color range of the TV is 150% more than HDTV standards. The screen has 1,920 × 1,080 pixels. It will be released sometime in 2009.

Robotic Junkyard Dog


Robot dogs are being developed to be closer to the real thing, but they're pretty costly to the average person. The Robotic Junkyard Dog is better suited for people who want a nifty robot for only a small amount of money. At just about $129.95 and supposedly made from scrap, you can get your own pet dog able to do up to 80 different moves. From different head movements, to tail swagging, to moving around freely, this robot dog even has infrared sensors to detect obstacles and even stairs. A simple remote can be used to command 18 tricks. One strange thing is the dog seems to be programmed to malfunction from time to time, in which case the owner has to reset its circuits.

Magic Mirror


This isn't the wicked witch's mirror. It's a new home security system add-on that looks like an ordinary mirror, but actually is hiding a CG character in a 30-inch LCD screen. By connecting the mirror to an already installed security system, “Basil of the Mirror”, the standard CG character that comes with the mirror, can alert you to all sorts of problems within the house. It can store up to 100 messages, like if "the garage door is open", or "there are guests at the door".

Fit-PC Slim


Probably the world's smallest PC system, Compulab's Fit-PC Slim measures only 4.3 x 3.9 x 1.2 inches. It is Linux-ready, and boasts an AMD Geode LX800 500MHz processor, 2.5-in hard drive, VGA output with Ethernet and Wifi capabilities. It's smaller than the earlier released Fit-PC but has more RAM and added features. Running only on 4-6 Watts of power, it clearly is energy effecient. The retail price according to Compulab is $220 to $245 for an empty system, which doesn't seem too steep.

New from Panasonic is the world's smallest interchangeable lens camera- the Lumix DMC-G1. Featuring 12.1 megapixels, the camera offers MEGA optical image stabilization, intelligent ISO, face detection and scene selector. The 3 inch LCD at the back can be pivoted freely 180 degrees across and 270 degrees vertically. SLR(single-lens reflex) cameras are powerful, but most of the time have been too bulky. This new mini version of an SLR will come as a nice surprise for people who want to have high quality photos using flexible changeable lenses.

Water powered calculator


Solar powered calculators may be well and good, but what happens when their battery backup runs out? They're pretty much almost useless unless you change the battery. Here comes the water-powered calculator. With just plain old tap water, you can charge up the calculator for up to a month, using only less than a cup of water. The inventors behind the device state that the water reacts with a zinc anode and cathode, creating an electrical current that powers the calculator. Although batteries aren't that costly, this is pretty green and environment friendly.
